Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program Suspension Receives Public Support
Following pressure from the public, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Department of Transportation (DOTr), and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) have suspended the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) and asked to revisit its implementation. This comes after public transport groups held a strike, social media provided additional support, and Senators like Grace Poe extended their concerns to LTFRB.
The suspension means that the jeepney phase-out will be suspended, and consolidation of old jeepney units will not be mandatory. Penalties will not be implemented as well. The concerned agencies are asked to consult and review the provisions of the PUVMP.
Traditional jeepney drivers will be able to continue earning for their families, and there will be additional modes of transport that will help commuters to travel every day. Most jeepney drivers who cannot afford to replace their old vehicles have expressed their joy and gratitude for the suspension, but remain vigilant about the government's next move.
Dexter P. Baño Jr., who rallied the reconsideration of the program, expressed his happiness and gratitude through Facebook and LinkedIn. Other responsible parties did the same.
There is still uncertainty about what could happen next. But, as mentioned, the agencies are asked to consult and revisit the program. The stakeholders will remain vigilant, and brokers like Baño will keep on working with the government to maintain the common interests of the public.
